Maverik brings it's successful lacrosse academy to Houston!

     Houston Lacrosse Academy

The Houston Lacrosse Academy is a supplemental program to community and school

programs. Academy students should approach this opportunity with the understanding

that they will not simply play games. The Academy is a place for those who want focus

and dedicate their time to improve their basic fundamentals by following a curriculum

necessary to compete at the next level. Additionally, more detailed lacrosse knowledge is

introduced as the overall "lacrosse IQ" improves within each player.

The most important attribute we want each HLA players to possess is an overwhelming

desire to maximize potential. This means they are willing to work hard both in and out of

scheduled practices. Players will gain self-confidence as they realize, through hard work

and dedication, that they can achieve their goals. These lessons will prove beneficial now

and throughout life as it helps boys build character and integrity through their efforts.

Based on age, each player that joins the HLA will be enrolled in the appropriate academy

class. The classes will work year-round to prepare for competition. In addition to

competing locally, each HLA student that registers during the fall semester will be

eligible to try out for the HLA Select Teams. These teams will participate in two national

tournaments over the summer. This will be a reward for those players that have made the

necessary commitment to their coaches and teammates. Once the HLA Select Teams

have been assembled, progress will be tested by playing games against other local select

teams, as well as visiting select teams. Depending on the number of Maverik participants,

there may even be opportunity to compete against other Maverik teams from other Texas

     cities.

May 2009

Congratulations to Mike Newton, Memorial HS Boys coach. Mike was named Texas' HS Boys Coach of the Year and will be among the nominees for the US Lacrosse HS Boys Coach of the Year award!

The Chapter is having an Open House!  Come meet members of the board and fellow lacrosse enthusiasts.  We will also be watching the Men's NCAA Championship game!  Join us Monday, May 25 - Memorial Day at Buffalo Wild Wings - Midtown.

The Chapter is holding an equipment drive!  We need everything, but especially sticks - both boys and girls!  The Chapter has been hosting PE Teacher Clinics in HISD and are planning more around Houston. In addition to those, several area's are hosting 'Demo-Days' at local schools to introduce more students to the game. PLUS we have new teams forming every year and schools interested in starting teams.

Having a stock of gear makes these events more exciting for adults and kids by letting them hold and handle a stick. It gets them excited about the game and learning more.

We are asking each local team [we have over 130 teams!] to collect extra gear from their players.  You can bring the gear to the Chapter Open House or contact someone on the board and we'll arrange to pick it up.  We appreciate your assistance in growing the sport we all love.

Finally, Good luck to the HS teams representing Houston in the State Play-offs!!!

Former Houston high school players offer their own camp and personal instruction:  Will McCance, Johns Hopkins, formerly The Woodlands and Taylor Brooks, LeMoyne, formerly Cy-Fair are offering a camp for boys grades 2-12 in August as well as personal instruction based on what they have learned and experienced playing with powerhouse Division I and Division II lacrosse programs. Visit the Camps Page or their website, Vantage Lacrosse, for more information.

Also:

The Houston Chapter of US Lacrosse recently hosted their first annual clinic for Houston area PE Teachers.  The clinic was open to all teachers interested in adding lacrosse to their curriculum for physical education classes.

The clinic covered the history of lacrosse, the growth of the game, the purpose of the Houston Chapter as well as the basic rules, equipment and terminology of the women’s and men’s game.  The teachers were then led to the field for hands-on learning of lacrosse basic skills (cradling, scooping, catching and throwing), so that they would be better prepared to teach their students.

Each teacher in attendance was given a copy of the US Lacrosse Physical Education Curriculum and a lacrosse stick so that they can continue to practice their skills. The teachers were eager to learn about lacrosse and asked several good questions.  They are excited and ready to bring lacrosse to a wider base of youth.

In addition to the clinic, the Houston Chapter has partnered with the Houston Independent School District to continue to introduce lacrosse to elementary students and has been invited to be a presenter at the districts annual Fall Conference for Elementary PE Teachers by Dr. Jose Santiago, Manager of Elementary Health / Physical Education Curriculum.

Mark Gray of Houston Youth Lacrosse organized the event with some assistance from the Houston Chapter and Dave Vollmer, longtime coach of the Lamar High School varsity team, was a key instructor.

US Lacrosse in conjunction with the Houston Chapter, will host a Coaches’ Education Program (CEP) Level 1 Instructional Clinic. Trained instructors will share their knowledge and experience with participants looking to improve their coaching knowledge base and increase their effectiveness on the field.

The clinic brings the material in the US Lacrosse Level 1 Online Courses to life through hands-on instruction facilitated by select, highly respected US Lacrosse trainers. Level 1 Clinics provide tools needed to effectively teach rules, basic player skills, team concepts, responsibilities and philosophies. Personalized discussions, seminars, and interactive demonstrations create a six-hour interactive experience for participants.

Clinics are open to all US Lacrosse member coaches of any range of experience willing to enhance their instructing techniques and increase their knowledge of lacrosse. They are part of the first-ever standardized lacrosse coaching curriculum pioneered by US Lacrosse. US Lacrosse strongly urges participants to complete the Level 1 online course prior to the clinic in order for the experience to be most effective. The clinics are also a component of national Level 1 coaching certification, which coaches may apply for later this year.

The explosive growth of lacrosse around the country is creating a greater need for knowledgeable and experienced coaches. US Lacrosse is dedicated to providing quality education for these important individuals through the Level1 curriculum.
