The Friends of Drew Webb present the 1st Annual “7’s for 7” Lacrosse Tournament

The Friends of Drew Webb We are excited to invite you to the “7‘s for 7” Lacrosse Tournament in
Houston in honor of Drew and benefiting the lacrosse community. After meeting with his parents, we
agreed that something should be done that would not only honor Drew's memory but help other athletes and
their families who might be in similar situations. After tossing around many ideas we decided to put on a 7 vs. 7
lacrosse tournament January 8 and 9, 2011. As you know, Drew was #7 through middle and high school and also part of his
time at Cornell. Seven vs. seven is a fun game and you don't need a full roster to field a team. The goal is to raise a
bit of money for mental health care in young adults but even more importantly to raise awareness of this disease among
young athletes and coaches. Our goal is for a young athlete with mental illness to be treated like an athlete with an ACL
injury or a disease like diabetes rather than feeling like or being treated as an outcast or weakling. We will have lacrosse
related vendors, plus programs with mental health professionals that work with professional and scholastic athletes to help
educate coaches/athletic trainers/parents to recognize warning signs and how to respond, and information for the players to
help them recognize and accept their peers, etc. All proceeds will go to the Depression Bipolar Support Alliance in Houston
(www.dbsahouston.org).
In the Houston area in the last year there have been at least two young-athlete suicides and as well as athletes
hospitalized with depression or anxiety disorders. One of them knew Drew well. Drew’s death hit him hard, and resulted
in his emergent hospitalization for suicidal risk, depression, etc. He is doing well now, and this episode resulted in
him and his family realizing that he needed more aggressive care. His parents credit Drew with saving their son’s life.
Can you believe that? They feel that not only did Drew provide lacrosse knowledge, a role model, and emotional support,
but that through his final act of pain Drew saved their son’s life. I didn’t know whether to smile or cry when I heard
that. But, it does bring a smile to Hall and Dorothy Webb’s faces through their tears.
So, we are trying to further Drew’s contributions to the lacrosse community. I am asking for your support. This
tournament will include up to 36 teams playing 7 vs. 7 on the South Campus fields (10001 Stella Link Rd, Houston, TX 77027)
on January 8th and 9th. There will be High School (Varsity, JV) and 7th/8th grade divisions. Team registration will b $500

The entry fee will be $450 per team + $250 for each additional team per organization, which is the same as last year.
We are also working with a contact at the College Station Visitor and Convention Bureau who will help all the teams
find group discounts on hotels.
